Koivu made his NHL debut with Montreal Canadiens on October 7, 1995 vs Philadelphia Flyers at Montreal Forum in a 7-1 Flyers win.

Koivu scored his 1st NHL goal vs Byron Dafoe of Los Angeles Kings at 18:15 of 1st period on October 23, 1995 at Montreal Forum in a 6-3 Montreal win. He had 2 goals in the game.

Koivu scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Johan Hedberg of Pittsburgh Penguins on November 18, 2002 at Bell Centre in a 5-4 OT Montreal win.

Koivu played in 1124 regular season NHL games, scoring 255 goals (46 GWG / 10 OTG), 577 assists with 809 penalty minutes and 80 NHL playoff games, scoring 18 goals (1 GWG), 41 assists with 62 penalty minutes.

Koivu played in the 1998 NHL All-Star Game and was voted to the 2003 game, but injuries kept him from playing.

Koivu was Montreal Canadiens captain from 1999 to 2009, tying Jean Béliveau as longest serving captain.
First ever European-born captain of the Montreal Canadiens.

Koivu represented Finland at 20 junior and 89 senior games, scoring 37 goals, 83 assists with 114 penalty minutes, being team captain for the senior team from 1998 to 2010.

Koivu served 8 seasons 2006-2014 as a member of the International Olympic Committee's athlete commission.

Birch Saku / Saku Koivu was inducted into the Finnish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame (Suomen Jääkiekkoleijona) in 2015. #228
