The Winnipeg Victorias would challenge the Montreal Victorias for the Stanley Cup, and on February 14, 1896 at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal they played a 1 game challenge with Winnipeg winning the Stanley Cup with a 2-0 win.

Jack Armytage scored the Stanley Cup winning goal, while Tote Campbell scored the 2nd goal and Whitey Merritt became the 1st goalie to wear leg protectors ..... white cricket pads in a Stanley Cup game.
