Gartner was having a great season with the Rangers, scoring 45 goals and 23 assists during the season, and prior to wearing the C on his Rangers jersey, was selected as the MVP at the 44th NHL All-Star game on February 6th, where he set a NHL record for fastest two goals from the start of an All-Star Game - in 3:37 (22 seconds apart) and won the Fastest Skater event during the Super Skills Competition.

This was the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Cup 1893 to 1993 and all teams wore a patch during the 1992-93 NHL Season.
