There were seven Smith brothers, born in Ottawa to Henry Smith (1843-1931) and Anne McLaughlin Smith (1849-1930), playing senior hockey in Ottawa on either amateur or professional grounds (or both). Henry was born in Bristol, Quebec and Anne in Bell's Corners, Ottawa.
Daniel "Moxie" Smith (1876-1926) played with his brother Alf on the Ottawa Hockey Club during the 1896-1897 AHAC season.
John "Jack" Smith (1878-1911) played with the Ottawa Hockey Club during the 1900-1901 CAHL season.
Youngest of the seven George Smith (1891-1954) played with the Ottawa Emmetts and the Ottawa Cliffsides 2nds in the Ottawa City League.
Both Alf and Tommy Smith won the Stanley Cup and are honored members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Harry Smith was a prolific scorer for many amateur and professional clubs. During the 1908-09 season he was a member of the Montreal Wanderers and on the ice for their 1909 Stanley Cup challenge championship winning team, although the team did not hold the Cup at the end of the season.
Billy Smith was a member of the 1908-09 FAHL version of the Ottawa Senators, alongside his older brother Alf. He was also a member of the Ottawa Emmetts and the Ottawa Aberdeens in the Ottawa City League, as well as of the Ottawa Cliffsides, Ottawa New Edinburgh and Ottawa Stewartons in the IPAHU.
The Smith family was very religious and two of the sisters to the hockey playing brothers were nuns Rev. Sister St. Hilda of the Grey Nuns, Buffalo, N., and "Minnie" Rev. Sister Mary of Nazareth of the Precious Blood Convent/Monastery in Ottawa, ON.
