A statue unveiled Sunday in Wayne Gretzky‘s honor in Brantford, Ontario, Canada was vandalized with blue spray paint, just one day after the official unveiling.
Brantford, Ontario is the hometown of Wayne Gretzky and his family. Gretzky a Hall of Famer was on hand Sunday for the grand opening ceremony of the newly renovated Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre.
The ceremony included the presentation of a pair of monuments dedicated to Brantford’s greatest son — one of Gretzky holding the Stanley Cup in an Edmonton Oilers uniform and another of him as a boy standing beside his two parents.
Police in Brantford say they have a video that was forwarded to them of Monday's overnight vandalism, which involved someone defacing the statues with spray paint sometime between 11:30 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Police have made no arrests yet.
Brantford Mayor Chris Friel calls the vandalism “disgraceful” and a “crime against the community.”
Crews were at the scene Tuesday morning, cleaning off the spray paint.
