Argentina Wins 2012 FIH Champions Trophy on Home Turf in Rosario, 1 to 0 over Great Britain in Gold Medal Game
The Lionesses won their 5th Womens Hockey Champions Trophy, and 1st Championship at home. The Gold Medal Game proved to be a real defensive battle for both teams, with not much opportunity for good scoring chances in the open field of play.
The Umpires from Ireland - Carol Metchette and Korea - Kang Hyun-Young had their hands full as this was a very Testy & Physical game as both teams recieved Green Cards with Argentina having 3 and Great Britain recieving 1.
The Winning Goal resulted from a penalty corner. Argentina was pushing hard late in the 1st half and won 5 penalty corners, converting on the 5th attempt. Argentina provided a variation involving Noel Barrionuevo and Silvina D’Elia (29’) who opened the scoring. Great Britain won 1 penalty corner during the game.
