Lemieux played his junior Hockey with Laval Voisins, leading them to the Gilles-Courteau Trophy championship in 1984.

Lemieux was drafted 1st overall in 1984 NHL Draft by Pittsburgh Penguins and made his NHL debut on October 11, 1984 vs Boston Bruins, also scoring his 1st NHL goal on his 1st shot of his 1st shift on Pete Peeters at 2:59 of 1st period at Boston Garden in a 4-3 Bruins win. He also had 1 assist in the game.

Lemieux scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Rick Wamsley of St. Louis Blues on December 31, 1985 at St. Louis Arena in a 8-4 Penguins win. He scored 4 goals in the game, with his 4th goal being the game winner.

Lemieux played in 915 regular season NHL games, scoring 690 goals (74 GWG / 11 OTG), 1033 assists with 834 penalty minutes and 107 NHL playoff games, scoring 76 goals (11 GWG), 96 assists with 87 penalty minutes.
