Charles Frederick "Charlie" Burns - Born February 14, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan - Died November 5, 2021 in Wallingford, Connecticut was an American/Canadian ice Hockey center, coach and general manager.

Burns played his 1st junior Hockey with Toronto St. Michael's Buzzers, then joined the Toronto Marlboros. He suffered a double skull fracture falling into the boards in an accident at practice in 1954, missing most of the 1954-55 OHA season. He recovered after a silver plate was installed to stabilize his skull in surgery and would wear a heavily padded helmet for the rest of his career. He would help the Marlboros win the 1956 Memorial Cup championship.

Burns would then join the senior Whitby Dunlops, playing there for 2 seasons and helping the win the Allan Cup championship in 1957 and the World Ice Hockey Championship in 1958 when Whitby represented Canada.

When Burns returned from Norway, where the 1958 World Championships were held, he signed with Detroit Red Wings and made his NHL debut on October 11, 1958 vs Montreal Canadiens at The Forum in a 2-0 Canadiens win.

Burns scored his 1st NHL goal vs Jacques Plante of Montreal Canadiens at 7:52 of 1st period on October 26, 1958 at Detroit Olympia in a 5-3 Canadiens win. He had 2 goals in the game.

Burns played in 749 regular season NHL games, scoring 106 goals (16 GWG), 198 assists with 256 penalty minutes and 31 NHL playoff games, scoring 5 goals (1 GWG), 4 assists with 6 penalty minutes.

Burns played for the NHL Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Oakland Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars during his career.

Burns was also a player coach with San Francisco Seals, California Seals, Minnesota North Stars. After retiring as a player, Burns coached the New Haven Nighthawks, Minnesota North Stars and Sioux City Musketeers.

Charlie Burns was inducted into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame in 1998
