EditThe Duluth Amphitheater was originally built in 1924, opening with the 1st Hockey game being played on December 4, 1924 .... Duluth Hornets vs Minneapolis Millers, won by Duluth 1-0.
It was the first artificial ice rink in the United States.
It had a ice surface of 80 x 215 feet and had a capacity of 5000 people.
The square corner building made of Bricks was added in 1927-28 with a drug store on the corner and National Tea Co. next door.
The Duluth Hornets used the Amphitheater as their home arena from 1924 to 1933, winning the American Hockey Association / AHA championship in 1927.
On February 12, 1939 during a benefit Hockey game for the Duluth Fire Department and Police Department, the roof collapsed due to heavy snow. Because the wooden roof had been audibly 'cracking' beforehand, the attendees were able to evacuate before the collapse and no serious injuries were reported. While there was an attempt to fix the roof, eventually the City of Duluth decided to raze the building and it was partially demolished in 1941.
