Schoenfeld made his NHL debut with Buffalo Sabres on October 8, 1972 vs Atlanta Flames at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium in a 5-3 Buffalo win.
Schoenfeld scored his 1st NHL goal vs Dunc Wilson of Vancouver Canucks at :32 of 3rd period on November 19, 1972 at Pacific Coliseum in a 9-5 Canucks win.
Schoenfeld played in 719 regular season NHL games, scoring 51 goals (5 GWG), 204 assists with 1132 penalty minutes and 75 NHL playoff games, scoring 3 goals, 13 assists with 151 penalty minutes.
Schoenfeld played in NHL All-Star Games 1977, 1980.
In September 1974, at age 22, Schoenfeld became the NHL’s youngest captain at that time in history.
Schoenfeld turned to coaching during his last season as a player. He first coached the Rochester Americans, then his own Buffalo Sabres for the 1985-86 season, getting fired after 43 games.
Schoenfeld coached various teams right up to 2009 when he coached 1 New York Rangers game while John Tortorella served a 1 game suspension.
Schoenfeld coached 4 NHL teams and while he was with the New Jersey Devils in 1988 is maybe his most famous moment as a coach. During the 1988 NHL playoffs vs Boston, game 3 at Brendan Byrne Arena the Devils home arena, New Jersey got spanked 6-1 by the Bruins. Schoenfeld was waiting for NHL referee Don Koharski when he left the ice after the game and immediately began arguing with him in the corridor between the benches and the Devils' dressing room. Koharski tripped and fell thinking Schoenfeld pushed him, their argument got more heated and Schoenfeld said "Good, 'cause you fell, you fat pig! Have another doughnut! Have another doughnut!" as Koharski and the other officials headed to their dressing room.
Schoenfeld was cleared of pushing Koharski, but was still suspended for 1 game and fined $1000.
Schoenfeld would later become general manager of the Hartford Wolf Pack and assistant GM for the New York Rangers.

Schoenfeld also recorded two albums during his time in Buffalo, both of which were recorded in collaboration with Buffalo Music Hall of Fame singer and producer John Valby.
The first, Schony, was released in 1973 and credited solely to Schoenfeld; the album consisted mostly of cover versions of a broad variety of songs with two originals: the Valby-penned bluegrass tune "Barbecue in Heaven" and Schoenfeld's own "Before." He recorded a second album in 1974 entitled The Key Is Love; this album, which was credited to both Schoenfeld and Valby, consisted of all original songs.
Jim Schoenfeld was inducted into the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame in 1995.
