Muckler never played a NHL game, spending his playing days in the Eastern Hockey League from 1955 to 1963, when a broken ankle ended his playing days.
Muckler had already been coaching while playing New York Rovers and Long Island Ducks. After his injury, Muckler also became the general manager of the Ducks.
Muckler stayed with the Ducks for 5 seasons, later joining the NHL New York Rangers in the summer of 1966, working with player personal.
In the summer of 1967, Muckler joined the Memphis South Stars as their new coach and general manager. He was promoted to the NHL again to coach the Minnesota North Stars in November, 1968, lasting until mid January, 1969 when he was fired.
Muckler then coached a number of AHL teams, Cleveland Barons, Jacksonville Barons, Providence Reds, Rhode Island Reds.
Muckler would join the Edmonton Oilers for the 1982-83 season, winning 5 Stanley Cup championships there.
Muckler would then coach the Buffalo Sabres for 4 seasons, before joining the New York Rangers in 1998, finishing his coaching career there in March 2000.
John Muckler was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
