Ritchie played 3 seasons in the National Hockey Association / NHA with the Quebec Bulldogs from the 1914-15 to 1916-17 seasons.
Ritchie then joined the Montreal Wanderers for the start of the newly formed National Hockey League / NHL for the 1917-18 season. He played 4 games for the Wanderers, scoring 5 goals (1 GWG), 2 assists with 3 penalty minutes before joining the Ottawa Senators to finish the 1st NHL season.
Ritchie played in 57 regular season NHL games, scoring 15 goals (2 GWG), 6 assists with 50 penalty minutes and 1 NHL playoff game with 0 points.
Dave Ritchie later refereed many NHL games, but no Stanley Cup finals playoff games.
NOTE
Dave Ritchie scored the 1st goal in NHL history while playing for Montreal Wanderers on Art Brooks of Arena Hockey Club of Toronto (Toronto Arenas) at 01:00 of the 1st period on December 19, 1917 at Montreal Arena (Westmount Arena) in 10-9 Montreal win. He then had the 1st NHL assist at 01:50 of the 1st period on a goal by Jack McDonald.
700 spectators watched the game.
On January 2, 1918 the Montreal Arena burned to the ground, and Montreal Wanderers owner, Sam Lichtenhein decided during the week after the Wanderers were finished too, so not only did the arena in which the 1st NHL game, goal, assist and many other historic ice Hockey firsts disappear, but so did the historic Montreal Wanderers team.
Dave Ritchie was released from his contract and signed with the Ottawa Senators, where he finished the 1917-18 NHL season.
