EditPaul Herbert "Paulie" Johnson - Born May 18, 1935 in West St. Paul, Minnesota – Died July 17, 2016 in Hopkins, Minnesota was an American ice Hockey left winger.
The 1958 IIHF World Championship marked Johnson's first experience with the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States (today known as USA Hockey) and was followed by appearances on two more U.S.A. National Hockey Teams, serving as a member of the 1959 U.S.A. National Team that competed in Brno & Prague in the former Czechoslovakia, and the 1961 U.S.A. National Team that played in Geneva, Switzerland.
In 1960, Johnson was a member of the United States Olympic Ice Hockey Team that captured the Gold Medal at the VIII Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California. He scored three goals and added two assists, helping the U.S. to a 5-0-0 overall record. His contributions included the game-winning goal against Canada (2-1), the Olympic favorite, on a breakaway.
Johnson also competed for the U.S.A. in 1964 at the IX Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria.

The Waterloo Black Hawks retired Johnson’s number 11 on April 6, 2002.
The late Herb Brooks – a former USA teammate and USHL rival who also coached Team USA to a gold medal at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York "Miracle On Ice" – spoke during the jersey retirement ceremony, and later related the following sentiment:
“He was one of the most dynamic Hockey players I’ve ever been around. He was one of the top half-dozen American players of his time.”
Paul Johnson was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001
