Holmqvist was Swedish Player of the year in 1967/68 and 1969/70.
At the 1969 World Ice Hockey Championships, Holmqvist was selected as the Best Goaltender at the tournament by the IIHF directorate. Sweden won the Silver Medal.
Holmqvist was selected to the Swedish All-Star Team in 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971.
- Holmqvist played in the 1968 and 1972 Winter Olympics.
- Holmqvist played in the 1965 (Bronze Medal), 1966, 1967 (Silver Medal), 1969 (Silver Medal), 1970 (Silver Medal), 1972 (Bronze Medal) and 1975 (Bronze Medal) World Ice Hockey Championships.
Holmqvist played for Strömsbro IF from 1958 to 1964 and AIK from 1964 to 1975. He also played 1 season in 1973-74 with the London Lions of the British National League / BNL and 1 season in North America with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association / WHA in 1975-76.
Leif Holmqvist was Elected to the Swedish Hockey Hall of Fame on February 10, 2012.
