Thoms made his NHL debut with Toronto Maple Leafs on January 3, 1933 vs New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden in a 4-2 Rangers win.
Thoms scored his 1st NHL goal vs Bill Beveridge of Ottawa Senators at 15:24 of 1st period on January 14, 1933 at Maple Leaf Gardens in a 5-3 Toronto win. He had 2 goals in the game.
Thoms shared the NHL goal-scoring lead with Charlie Conacher in 1935–36 season. Thoms had 33 goals while playing on a line with Frank Finnigan and Buzz Boll.
