The USA National Junior Ice Hockey Team defeated Team Sweden, 3 to 1, to capture the Gold Medal at the IIHF - 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships. This is the the third time in four years the United States has earned a medal at the IIHF World Junior Championships, two of those Gold. The 2013 Team USA started a little slow, and then bacame a whole team, where everybody contributed. In the end, all 22 players on the U.S. roster had at least one point, including goalie John Gibson (two assists), and 15 players scored at least one goal. Each player made a contribution in helping the United States close out the event in dominant fashion with a four-victory push that began with a preliminary-round win against Slovakia that was needed just to gain entrance spot in the medal round.
It continued against the Czech Republic, Canada and finally Sweden. The Americans outscored the opposition, 24-5, during their final four matches.
The United States has now won Gold at the IIHF World Junior Championships three times - 2004, 2010, 2013.
"I couldn't be more proud of our players and staff" said Phil Housley, head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team. . "And i'm also really happy for the Hockey fans in our country. This was a total team effort throughout the tournament. It was a very diificult challenge against a excellant Swedish team. We had a terrific experience here and i'd like to thank the Russian Hockey Federation for being an excellant host.
Rocco Grimaldi was named the player of the game for the Americans.
John Gibson was named the tournament's best goaltender after posting a 5-2 record with a 1.36 goals-against average and .955 save percentage. His save percentage established a new American record at the tournament.
