The Memorial Cup has been won by by every district in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) except the Maritimes Provinces. The drought is finally over. 93 years The Memorial Cup has been won now, and its finally going to the East Coast. Atlantic Canada is now Memorial Cup Champions. The Saint John Sea Dogs Ice Hockey Team are Memorial Cup Champions after only 6 years of existence in the league.
The Number 77 will forever be a lucky number for all Saint John Sea Dogs players, owners, fans, volunteers and the team organization. From the start of the Ice Hockey season, to lifting The Memorial Cup, The Sea Dogs Won 77 games. They also won The Rivalry Cup, The Jean Rougeau Trophy and The Presidents Cup to go with their Memorial Cup win this season.
Tournament MVP Jonathan Huberdeau put the game away at 16:17 of the 3rd period to make the score 3 to 1 for The Sea Dogs. Zack Phillips scored what proved to be "The Game Winner" at 13:17 of the 1st period. Simon Despres opened the scoring for The Sea Dogs with a short handed goal at 2:24 of the 1st period. Riley Brace got the only goal for St. Michael's Majors at 14:41 of the 2nd period on a sweet 3 way passing play. The Sea Dogs goalie Jacob DeSerres shut the door after that stopping 34 of 35 shots for the win.
In a fitting moment for Atlantic Canada, New Brunswick native and CHL President David Branch presented The Memorial Cup to Saint John Sea Dogs Captain Mike Thomas who is also from New Brunswick. Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant and St. Michael's Majors head coach Dave Cameron are both from P.E.I. Gerard Gallant also won for the 2nd year in a row, CHL Coach of The Year.
