In January of 2009, The Royal Mint launched a nationwide competition, inviting the British public to create designs for a new series of 50p coins intended to commemorate the 2012 Summer Olympics. The 30,000 entries that were submitted have been narrowed down to the best design for each of the 29 featured sports to create lasting mementos of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games.
The winner of the Hockey design competition was Robert Evans of Wales, who based his design on a series of photographs that he took of two University of Glamorgan hockey players in action. Cardiff-based Evans entered the competition because he is passionate about sport and thought it was a fantastic way to get involved with London 2012.
