The game went scoreless until early in the third period when Daniel Winnik of Canada, following up a Torrey Mitchell breakaway, tucked the rebound past KalPa goalie Denis Godla. Eetu Luostarinen then scored for the Finnish side to even the score at 11:24, knocking the puck out of the air at the front side of the Cabadian net.
Canada outshot KalPa 40-23 during the game, a 1-1 tie, and then a shootout that went to the 8th round.
The shootout was tied at 2-2 following three shooters each, bringing it to sudden death.
Jaakko Rissanen scored with a high backhand in the eighth round of a shootout to give Finnish club KalPa Kuopio a 2-1 win over three-time defending champion Canada.
It was KalPa's first Spengler Cup title in the history of the annual holiday tournament.
