EditMurray Albert Dowey - Born January 3, 1926 in Toronto, Ontario - Died May 26, 2021 in Toronto, Ontario was a Canadian ice Hockey goaltender.
- Toronto Hockey League / THL Major Commercial Series Champion 1947 with Toronto Barkers / Barker's Biscuits Hockey Team.
- Winter Olympics Gold Medal Champion 1948 with Team Canada / RCAF Flyers.
Dowey never played pro Hockey, instead played for Army teams in the Toronto area during the war years and also played for teams in the commercial leagues in the Toronto Hockey League.
Dowey became a late edition to the RCAF Flyers Hockey Team that was to represent Canada at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, when their starting goalie was deemed not fit to travel with the team.
Dowey had been recommended by RCAF Flyers captain George Mara, a teammate of Dowey on the Barker's Biscuits team.
Dowey never got to practice with the RCAF Flyers until they reached Europe, and once there, became a sensation, as he was the only goalie to use a trapper for his glove hand and a blocker glove holding his stick.
Dowey got dubbed "Fast Hands" during exhibition games leading up to the Winter Olympics, as he would catch the puck in his trapper, something the Europeans had never seen before, as they had still been using blockers on both hands while playing.
Dowey would go on to set Winter Olympics records with 5 shutouts and a GAA of 0.62% in 8 games played, as Team Canada / RCAF Flyers would take the 1948 Winter Olympics Gold Medal championship.
After those Olympic games, Dowey had to return to Canada to compete for his Barker's Biscuits team in the Toronto Hockey League playoffs, and never finished the European tour with the RCAF Flyers.
Dowey also missed the RCAF Flyers’ post-tour victory parade in Ottawa, although he did attend a Rideau Hall ceremony to receive a commemorative ring from the Governor General, the Viscount Alexander.
Murray Dowey was inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
NOTE
In December 2009 at age 83, Dowey was honoured with torch bearer status during the Toronto leg of the cross-Canada Olympic Flame Relay in advance of the 2010 Vancouver games.
The RCAF Flyers Hockey Team were inducted into the Canadian Forces Sports Hall of Fame in 1971, the Greater Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame in 1998, and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 2008.
