The Columbus Blue Jackets played a 82 game regular NHL season, winning 28, losing 39, 9 ties and 6 overtime losses, finishing 5th in NHL Central Division and 13th in NHL Western Conference. No playoffs.

Columbus would play in their first NHL game ever, losing 5–3 to the Chicago Blackhawks at Nationwide Arena on October 7, 2000. Bruce Gardiner scored the 1st goal in franchise history.

The Blue Jackets would win their 1st ever game on October 12, defeating the Calgary Flames 3–2 at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Columbus would win its 1st home game on October 27, defeating the visiting Washington Capitals 3–1.

Geoff Sanderson would lead the Blue Jackets with 30 goals and 56 points, while Espen Knutsen would lead Columbus with 44 assists, and Tyler Wright led the club with 140 penalty minutes.
