Davey learned his Hockey in Port Arthur, Ontario where he was born to English immigrant parents. He also played for the Elmwood Midget team.
At age 16, his family returned to England and he quickly sought opportunities in the British Hockey community. With assistance from a local newspaper, he secured an initial placement with the Princes Ice Hockey Club in London. His puck handling skills and speed on the ice impressed many and he quickly adapted to British ice Hockey.
Davey was soon playing for Streatham, recruited by coach Carl Erhardt and was also selected to the Great Britain National Team, where at age 17 was the youngest player at the 1932 European Championships held in Berlin, scoring 8 goals in 4 games.
During the 1932-33 season, Davey played in Switzerland for ZSC Lions, Zürcher SC and the Zurich City Team. Great Britain did not send a team to the world championships in 1933.
Back in England for the 1933-34 season, Davey was back playing for Streatham, while also playing for Grosvenor House Canadians in some exhibition games. He also played for Great Britain at the 1934 world championships.
The next season, Davey helped Streatham win the 1935 English League championship and helped Great Britain win a Bronze Medal at the 1935 world championships.
Davey was a big part of the Great Britain Team at the 1936 Winter Olympics. His play helped them win the Gold Medal, as he scored 7 goals in 6 games, including a important goal vs the Canadian Team, which they defeated 2-1.
Davey and the Great Britain Team would win back to back World Championship Silver Medals in 1937 and 1938.
Davey went to Scotland for the 1938-39 season, playing for the Falkirk Lions for 2 seasons, also coaching and teaching them the style of play he was known for.
With WWII starting, Davey returned to Canada, and while serving with the Navy there, played Hockey with Geraldton Gold Miners, St. Catharines Saints, Hamilton Majors, Toronto Navy Bulldogs, Toronto HMCS York and Toronto Uptown Tires. He won the J. Ross Robertson Cup with Hamilton Majors.
Davey returned to England in 1946, joining Streatham again, and then the Wembley Lions.
He also represented Great Britain again at the 1948 Winter Olympics, playing defence, but still scoring 5 goals in 7 games, as GB finished in 5th place.
After retiring as a player, Davey refereed Hockey games for many years in various leagues in England.
Gerry Davey holds the all-time record for the most goals scored by a player for the Great Britain Men's National Ice Hockey Team, with 44 goals across his international career.
Gerry Davey was inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 1949
