The North Stars played a 80 game regular NHL season, winning 36, losing 28 with 16 ties finishing 2nd in Adams Division and 6th in NHL standings.

In the 1980 NHL playoffs, the North Stars defeated Toronto Maple Leafs 3-0 in games, Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in games and lost to Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 in games in semi-finals.
