Henderson made his NHL debut with Detroit Red Wings on March 23, 1963 vs Toronto Maple Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens in a 2-1 Red Wings win. Henderson has quoted he only had 1 shift in the game after he elbowed Maple Leafs Dick Duff in the head, resulting in a fighting majors for both players and Henderson also got a 2 minute holding penalty .... 7 penalty minutes in 1st NHL shift.
Henderson scored his 1st NHL goal vs Glenn Hall of Chicago Black Hawks at 13:54 of 3rd period on January 29, 1964 at Chicago Stadium in a 2-2 tie. Tying goal.
Henderson scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Ed Giacomin of New York Rangers on October 27, 1966 at Detroit Olympia in a 5-3 Detroit win. Henderson scored 3 in a row (natural hatty) in the 2nd period, his 3rd the game winner. He also scored a 4th goal in the 3rd period.
Henderson played in 707 regular season NHL games, scoring 236 goals (40 GWG), 241 assists with 304 penalty minutes and 56 NHL playoff games, scoring 11 goals (4 GWG), 14 assists with 28 penalty minutes.
Henderson played in NHL All-Star Games 1972,1973.
Henderson jumped leagues in 1974 to the World Hockey Association / WHA, playing 2 seasons with Toronto Toros, then another 3 seasons with the Birmingham Bulls.
After the WHA mostly merged into the NHL in 1979, Birmingham joined the Central Hockey League / CHL and Henderson stayed with them, except playing 34 games for the NHL Atlanta Flames in 1980.
Henderson played in 360 regular season WHA games, scoring 140 goals, 143 assists with 112 penalty minutes and 5 WHA playoff games, scoring 1 goals, 1 assist and 0 penalties.
Henderson is best know for scoring the 1972 Summit Series winning goal vs Vladislav Tretiak in game 8 at Luzhniki Palace of Sports in Moscow at 19:26 of 3rd period.
