Stevens played in the 1978 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Hobomock minor ice Hockey team from Pembroke.
Stevens made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh Penguins on March 1, 1988 vs Minnesota North Stars, also scoring his 1st NHL goal vs Don Beaupre at 4:29 of 1st period at Pittsburgh Civic Arena in a 8-3 Penguins win. He also had 1 assist in the game.
Stevens scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Kelly Hrudey of Los Angeles Kings on October 31, 1989 at Pittsburgh Civic Arena in a 8-4 Los Angeles win.
Stevens was known in the as a power forward at 6'3" 230 lbs, during his playing days. Mario Lemieux, his teammate for many years had this to say about him “He was one of the best, if not the best, power forwards for a few years,” “He developed into this beast who could skate, hit and shoot. He had all the tools to be the best left-winger, which I think he was, for a few years in the NHL.”
Stevens played in 874 regular season NHL games, scoring 329 goals (35 GWG / 4 OTG), 197 assists with 1470 penalty minutes and 103 NHL playoff games, scoring 46 goals (9 GWG / 1 OTG), 60 assists with 170 penalty minutes.
Stevens played in NHL All-Star Games 1991, 1992, 1993.
Stevens was selected to the NHL First All-Star Team in 1992.
Stevens represented the United States 32 times as a senior, scoring 11 goals, 9 assists with 42 penalty minutes.
Stevens is also one of four NHL players to have accumulated more than 50 goals and at least 200 PIM in a season, the others are Keith Tkachuk, Brendan Shanahan and Gary Roberts.
Kevin Stevens was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2024.
