McPhee made his NHL debut with New York Rangers on April 5, 1983, a playoff game vs Philadelphia Flyers at The Spectrum in a 5-3 Rangers win. He had 1 assist in the game.
McPhee scored his 1st NHL goal vs Pelle Lindbergh of Philadelphia Flyers at 2:50 of 2nd period on April 7, 1983 at The Spectrum in a 4-3 Rangers win (playoff game).
McPhee played in 115 regular season NHL games, scoring 24 goals (5 GWG), 25 assists with 257 penalty minutes and 29 NHL playoff games, scoring 5 goals, 3 assists with 73 penalty minutes.
After retiring as a player, McPhee got his first taste of Hockey management with Vancouver Canucks in 1992 as director of Hockey operations - 1992 to 1997.
McPhee was Washington Capitals general manager from 1997 to 2014. He drafted Alexander Ovechkin.
McPhee joined the New York Islanders for 1 season as a senior advisor.
McPhee joined the Vegas Golden Knights in 2016 as general manager, helping to build the team for it's 1st NHL season. He is currently president of Hockey operations.
George McPhee was inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987.
George McPhee was inducted into the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
