EditJANVIER / January
Divertissements sur la Glace / Entertainment on the ice.
Jean Mariette, a French engraver and print dealer active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, created an engraving titled "JANVIER" (January) depicting a lady on skates who has fallen on ice, dropping her urn of milk, which the dog is licking up.
Her friend and 3 children with crooked sticks look on, while a gentleman is pulling a sleigh with 2 passengers on it.
In the background, you can see a person pushing themselves along in a sled, and in the far background, skaters, one with a stick in his hand.
The print, made around the end of the 17th century, measuring approximately 38.5 x 32 cm (15.16 x 12.6 inches), was etched and engraved on hand-laid paper, demonstrating Mariette's skill in printmaking.
From a Suite of 12 Months of the Year, which were all done by Jean Mariette.
Some were color hand tinted.
NOTE
Children with crooked sticks on ice ........ that's got to be a early form of Hockey. Their not Kolf sticks that the Dutch used, but crooked sticks.
