EditMichael James Rodden - Born April 24, 1891 in Mattawa, Ontario – Died January 11, 1978 in Toronto, Ontario was a Canadian sports journalist, coach, National Hockey League and college referee.
Rodden was an amateur referee in the Ontario Hockey Association / OHA from 1918 to 1934 and an NHL referee from 1927 to 1936.
Rodden was the referee in the Stanley Cup Challenge series in 1927-28. Along with partner Lou Marsh, Rodden refereed all five games in the series between the Montreal Maroons and the New York Rangers.
Rodden refereed the NHL All-Star Game on February 14, 1934. Through his long officiating career,
Rodden refereed 2,864 games in total, including 1,187 in the NHL.
While doing his coaching and refereeing, he worked full-time as a sports editor for the Toronto Globe for a decade before becoming the sports editor. He left in 1936 to assume that position for the Kingston Whig-Standard and stayed on until 1944,
Mike Rodden was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a referee in 1962.
NOTE
Rodden was a 2 time Grey Cup winner in football (1928, 1929) and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1964.
