Wayne Gretzky returned to Northlands Coliseum on October 15, 1989. It was the start of the new NHL season, and this was the 6th game for Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings.

Gretzky had already scored 3 goals and 9 assists to start the season, putting him at 1,849 NHL points in his career to that date, just 1 point away from tying Gordie Howe for the NHL All Time Points Record.

Gretzky, tied the record with a assist on a goal by Bernie
Nichols at 04:32 of the 1st period.

Then late in the 3rd period, Kings trailing Oilers 4-3 there was a faceoff in the Oilers zone with the Kings goalie pulled and a 6th player for Edmonton.

Kings keep the puck in the Oilers zone, Gretzky goes to his office (behind net), as the play develops, Gretzky comes out far side of the net to the slot area, Dave Taylor manages to get puck onto net area and Gretzky with with a backhand flip over the glove of Bill Ranford ties the game and sets the New NHL All Time Record with 1,851 points.

The game stopped for presentations to Gretzky, with Gordie Howe, Walter Gretzky and Janet Gretzky there.

Gretzky then went on to score the game winner at 03:24 of 1st overtime period.

Bill Ranford was the Edmonton goalie for this historic game.
