EditIce hockey team of Detroit College of Medicine, in 1897–98. This team consisted of several Canadian medical students. Among them Jack Gibson from Berlin, Ontario, as well as Earl C. Hay and Percy Howard Willson from Listowel, Ontario.
Gibson and Hay both became dentists and Willson a medical doctor. All three went on to play with the Portage Lake Hockey Club in Houghton, Michigan. Hay and Willson played for the club from 1901 to 1902 while Gibson also played for the club in the IHL in 1904–05 and 1906–07. Percy Willson also refereed games in the IHL.
Jack "Doc" Gibson is inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame, in the builder category, for his role in creating the first fully professional ice hockey league in 1904, the International Hockey League (IHL).
