Juhani Wahlsten scored two goals when Finland beat Czechoslovakia 3–1 at the World Championships of 1967 in Vienna, a match which has been considered one of the breakthrough performances of Finnish hockey history.
Wahlsten made his major debut for the Finnish Lions in 1959 at the World Championships in Prague. He played for Finland at three Olympic Games and five World Championship tournaments. In the domestic league Wahlsten played at four different clubs, settling finally at TPS Turku, where he also worked as coach after his playing career. He was also one of the first Finnish hockey pioneers in Central and Southern European leagues, playing at AC Klagenfurt in Austria in the 1969/70 season and later coaching in Spain, Germany and Switzerland.
