Karlsson played mainly in Brynäs IF with whom he won the Championship in ice hockey eight times - 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1977, 1980

Karlsson played one season, 1975-1976, with Krefeld Pinguine in what was then West Germany.

Stefan Karlsson played in Sweden men's national ice Hockey team and won six medals at the World Ice Hockey Championships (three bronze and three silver medals).
