Some History about the Techau Tavern
In 1899, R. J. Techau (a German immigrant) decided to move his business again, this time to Union Square. At this time he built a new four-story brick building for his newly renamed Techau Tavern and Hotel, which was located on the west side of Mason Street, between Ellis and Eddy streets (109-117 Mason Street). This business burned in September 1900, but Techau rebuilt Techau Tavern in this location. After its move to Union Square, Techau Tavern became one of the most popular restaurants and taverns for prominent San Franciscans. Early advertisements called it a “restaurant and family resort,” where people could listen to live musical entertainment. Techau also had an ice-skating rink nearby in The Tenderloin.
