Weyburn, a small town in Southern Saskatchewan, which draw players from other towns within an hour of Weyburn were crowned Canadian Female Midget AAA Champions on Saturday April 26, 2014.
It was just the third major National Hockey Championship for a team from the Saskatchewan town of just over 10,000 people. The first came in 1984 when the Weyburn Red Wings won the national men's junior A championship, which they won again as host team in 2005.
The Gold Wings lost only one game all tournament and defeated the Sudbury Lady Wolves in the semifinal before meeting the Edmonton Thunder, the most successful women's midget Hockey club program in Canada, in the championship final.
Tessa Wilson opened the scoring for the Gold Wings (6-1-0-0) with a goal off a pass from Caitlin Dempsey at 16:01 of the first.
Bailee Bourassa scored the eventual winner 1:50 into the second period.
Brett Campbell pulled the Thunder (2-4-1-0) to within one goal, scoring on the power play at 7:01 of the second period.
Weyburn's Jane Kish made 29 saves for the victory. Edmonton’s Tracie Kikuchi turned aside 23 shots in the loss.
Jane Kish was named Top Goaltender for the 2014 Esso Cup tournament.
The Esso Cup, Canadian Female Midget AAAChampionships were played at Gateway Ice Centre in Stoney Creek, Ontario.
