Team Canada Women Are World Ice Hockey Champions Again
A Thrilling Gold Medal Game for all Ice Hockey Fans, saw a very physical contest being played with many penalties being called, which resulted in power play goals and even a short handed goal.
Hayley Wickenheiser scored the first goal of the game, jumping on a turnover, skates in on a breakaway and then banks in her own rebound - Short Handed at 7:52 of the 1st. Kendall Coyne of Team USA tied the score at 12:54 of the 1st. Canada's Jayna Hefford scored a Power Play goal at 4:07 of the 2nd, and then Caroline Ouellette made it 3 to 1 at 5:36. Team USA scored 2 quick Power Play goals to tie the game at 16:43 Brianna Decker, and at 18:16 Gigi Marvin. Team USA opened the scoring in the 3rd on a Power Play by Gigi Marvin at 2:57, Team Canada tied the game on a Power Play goal by Meghan Agosta at 17:22, overtime was next.
All-Star honours: Forward Hayley Wickenheiser and defenceman Laura Fortino of Team Canada were named tournament all-stars. U.S. forwards Kelli Stack and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls and defenceman Gigi Marvin and Swiss goaltender Florence Schelling rounded out the team.
Florence Schelling won the Directorate Award as the top goaltender while Kelli Stack was named the top forward and Finland’s Jenni Hiirokoski was named top defenceman.
Game proves popular: A sellout crowd of 4,007 for Saturday’s gold-medal game pushed the total attendance for the weeklong tournament to 26,205. Those are record for a single game and overall totals for a women’s world tournament in the U.S.
