On August 26, 1971 Boston Bruins Bobby Orr holds up the 5 year contract he signed at $200,000 per season, a total of $1 Million, establishing a new financial standard for the NHL.
Orr had just recorded 37 goals and 102 assists for 139 points over 78 regular season NHL games, setting single-season NHL records for assists and points by a defenceman.
Orr also had just won the James Norris Memorial Trophy for the 4th straight year, the Hart Memorial Trophy for the 2nd straight year and was selected to the NHL First All-Star Team for the 4th straight year.
