The Penguins played a 78 game regular NHL season, winning 26, losing 38 with 14 ties, finishing 4th in NHL West Division.

In the 1972 NHL playoffs, the Penguins lost to Chicago 4-0 in games in first round.

Jean Pronovost became the 1st player to score 30 goals in a season for the Penguins.
