EditTrail Smoke Eaters / Canada vs Sweden at The Temple of Montchoisi, the Montchoisi ice rink in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Opening game of 1961 Ice Hockey World Championships, which Canada would win 6-1 on March 2, 1961.
The Trail Smoke Eaters (Canada) would go undefeated in 7 games played at the tournament, winning the 1961 Ice Hockey World Championship.
Sweden would finish 4th.
NOTE
Canada's Trail Smoke Eaters were making a stand as amateur Hockey players against a Soviet system that was decidedly professional - army men recruited from all of its republics against Canadian farm boys, factory workers and firemen. The 1961 World Hockey Championship in Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland, would come to be a touchstone of Canadian Hockey, as they defeated the Soviet Team 5-1 on final day of tournament. There have been other Olympics and other world championships, but the Smokies are an enduring icon, as the last Canadian Amateur Team to win a world championship.
