While playing for Detroit Red Wings, Unger scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Cesare Maniago of Minnesota North Stars on December 15, 1968 at Detroit Olympia in a 5-2 Red Wings win. His 2nd goal was the game winner.
Unger played in 1105 regular season NHL games, scoring 413 goals (54 GWG), 391 assists with 1075 penalty minutes and 52 NHL playoff games, scoring 12 goals (1 GWG), 18 assists with 105 penalty minutes.
Unger scored at least 30 goals in 8 consecutive seasons for the St. Louis Blues from 1971-72 to 1978-79 seasons.

Unger set an NHL record by playing 914 consecutive games in the regular season between February 24, 1968, and December 21, 1979, doing so with 4 teams: the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues and Atlanta Flames. Unger's streak came to an end after team coach Al MacNeil benched him on December 21, 1979.
