Another early feature of the Patterson helmet was the existence of the centre bar. The sPAPs helmet was wide open as was the first Cooper-Weeks SK-1 and SK-2 helmets. As you can see the idea of padding was minimal.It was there to prevent the edges from cutting the player and to cover the rivet like bolts in the adjustable holes.
