Highlights – New Jersey vs Edmonton. November 19, 1983 – Wayne Gretzky has his first 8 point NHL game, Jari Kurri 5 goals, Willy Lindstrom 3 goals. The big story was after the game when Edmonton Sun asked Gretzky the question that pushed the wrong button. Gretzky called the Devils Mickey Mouse. According to the Sun the comments went like this – Gretzky found it no fun running up the score against his old friend Ron Low.(Gretzky) – It got to the point where it wasn’t even funny – How long has it been for them? Three years? Five? Seven? Probably closer to nine. Well, it’s about time they got their act together. They’re ruining the whole league. They better stop running a Mickey Mouse organization and put somebody on the ice. I feel damn sorry for Ron Low and Chico Resch. The Devils Made Me Do It was the headline in the Sun the next day. Gretzky telegraphed an apology to the Devils. I regret the statements I made. It’s not my business to say anything like that. Devils coach Billy MacMillan was fired after the game, the 18th loss in 20 games for the Devils. The next time the Oilers played in New Jersey, fans were wearing Mickey Mouse ears and holding signs as Gretzky skated around during warmups
