Knievel, who was once player-manager-owner of a minor-league Hockey team in Butte, Montana U.S.A., was invited to take four shots on Toros No. 1 goalie Gilles Gratton between periods of a home game against the Houston Aeros. Knievel was offered $5,000 for every goal.
ABC’s Wide World of Sports flew in Frank Gifford for the much-hyped event to cover the shootout.
At show time, the unpredictable Gratton was nowhere to be found, so NHL veteran, and Toros No. 2 goalie Les Binkley went in net.
“We saw Evel getting dressed,” Binkley said. “You could have put your fist inside his hip from being in so many crashes. He was in rough shape.”
Wearing a No. 13 Toros sweater, Knievel managed to score twice, including a deke that went awry, and skate away with 10 grand.
“I made my two saves, got $2,000 and Evel made back his (travel) money,” Binkley laughed. “I put my cash toward a good team party.
