“By defying the Iron Curtain and defecting to North America, the Stastny brothers changed the face of professional hockey forever,” said Dave Naylor of TSN Radio. “To help people appreciate their story, we take viewers back to the brothers’ home city of Bratislava in an Eastern Bloc country with limited freedoms. The circumstances under which the Stastnys escaped, including the torturous choice to leave family behind, mark an important time in both hockey and political history.”

Filmed on location in Vienna, Austria and the brothers’ hometown of Bratislava, Slovakia, Stastny takes a revealing look at the Stastnys’ choice to leave their home of Czechoslovakia, allowing them to become the first star hockey players to defect from Europe’s communist-controlled Eastern Bloc.

Recalling the dramatic escape of the Stastny brothers from the 1980 European Cup finals through Vienna, Austria, with a valuable assist from former Quebec Nordiques president Marcel Aubut, the feature reveals the struggles of athletes living behind the Iron Curtain, and examines the Stastny brothers’ legacy as a trailblazing inspiration to Eastern European players looking to compete in North America.

Hi,
I’ve recently had a few weeks away from hockey due to work commitments and for some reason my shot has totally disappeared.
I didn’t have much of a shot beforehand but I was able to get alright power into my wrist shot and used to at least get it up to about glove height, since my return though I can only seem to get the power if I am shooting low (a few inches off the ice) and when I try and go top corners the puck just flutters and doesn’t really get above about knee —> Hip height.
I’ve tried looking at everything I can think of that I might be doing wrong and have been watching other people/ tuition videos and I just can’t seem to work it out.
I know its a fairly common problem for beginners but how did you guys get around it/ get past it?

Wow, on the happenstance that somebody would visit this forum…the Ultra-Violet Mooses have become/evolved into the El Paso Black Rhinos in 2016/17…heading into the 2017/18 season, we now use a stainless steel hockey puck, 3.5″×1.5″, with an automotive back-up alarm w/9-volt battery for the sounding device (112 db!). Works great, we have played over 100 hour with this puck, and both the puck casing and the alarm device are still in impervious, great shape! In fact, this puck should last for years!

Still casting about to play with an oponent, after we have been playing intra-club for 6 years now (since 2011). Hoping Chicago Blackhawks might like to play with another team, or the Dallas Stars could inaugurate a program.

Yeah, and we all play totally blind! We pebble the blue lines (we are almost NEVER offsides), and have buzzing sounding devices on the goals, as well as the alarm sounding device in the puck. Our goalies talk all the time, alerting players as to direction and orientation. This is a great game!

The pebbled blue lines are the great orientation devices: when you skate over a blue line, you know where you are! We call our positions to each other using “first base,” “second” and “third”…eliminates the misdirection confusion of “left-right,” which is relative to any one player’s position.

Hope somebody out there sees this and might like to start a new blind hockey team in the Southwest United States – Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California, Colorado: talking to you guys!
