The Montreal Canadiens and the Chicago Blacks Hawks would play in the 1st Stanley Cup Final to play a 5 games series for the championship. On April 3, 1931, game 1 was played at Chicago Stadium, with the Canadiens winning 2 to 1. Game 2 on April 5, 1931 saw over 18,000 fans pack Chicago Stadium for game two to set a record for largest attendance in hockey history to that time. The game went into double OT before Johnny Gottselig scored for the home team Chicago victory 2 to 1. Game 3 was played at Montreal Forum on April 9, 1931. This game needed triple OT, where the Black Hawks Cy Wentworth scored the winner in a 3 to 2 victory. Still one of the 5 longest games in Stanley Cup history. Game 4, also at the Montreal Forum on April 11, 1931 had the Canadiens tying the series at 2 games each, with a close 2 to 1 victory. Game 5, for the Stanley Cup Championship, was also played at the Montreal Forum on April 14, 1931. George Hainsworth shut the door on the Black Hawks in a 2 to 0 victory. For game 5, Foster Hewitt came to Montreal to make the radio broadcast play-by-play, and transmission lines carried his broadcast to radio stations across Canada. Interest was so high that Montrealers in the thousands lined up for end zone and standing room tickets. Johnny Gagnon opened the scoring in the second period and Howie Morenz scored an insurance goal in the third period.
