James William Ward - Born September 1, 1906 in Fort William, Ontario - Died November 15, 1990 in Portland, Oregon was a Canadian professional ice Hockey player who played the position of Right Wing.

Ward played his junior Hockey for the Kenora Thistles from 1922 to 1926, and then joined the senior Fort William Forts for one season 1926-27.

Ward joined the Montreal Maroons for the start of the 1927-28 season, having a fine rookie campaign, scoring 10 goals and 2 assists in 42 games.

Ward was known for his resiliency and tenacity, rarely missing any action due to injury. In his entire 11 year career with the Maroons he missed only 21 games. He was also a consistent player, scoring at least ten goals in ten of the 12 seasons back when the NHL regular season was just 48 games. He was one of the league's fastest skaters despite being one of the bigger players of his era.

Ward's best statistical year came in 1931-32, when he had 19 goals and 19 assists in 48 games.

Ward was a member of one Stanley Cup winning team with the Maroons in 1934-35, when Montreal defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in three straight games.

Ward was the Maroons' all time leader in games played (491), and is 2nd in goals (143), assists (124) and points (267).

When the Maroons folded after 1937-38, Ward signed with the Montreal Canadiens, playing 36 games for the Canadiens in 1938-39, scoring four goals and three assists.

Ward suffered a shoulder injury in February of 1939 and his NHL career was over. He spent a season in the minor leagues with the New Haven Eagles of the IAHL, as a player-coach before a bad back forced him to retire.
