Teemu Selanne will return for a 19th season. Selanne agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract to return to the Ducks on Thursday after the 41-year-old right wing decided his surgically repaired knee will hold up for his 19th NHL season. He finished eighth in the league last season with 80 points, the third-best season in league history for a player past his 40th birthday.

Remembering Ripper

Former Vancouver Canucks tough guy Rick Rypien was found dead in his home Crowsnest Pass, Alta on August 15 2011. Rick Rypien's cause of death has not been determined to the general public yet.

Rypien had just one assist in nine games with the Vancouver Canucks last season after leaving the team because of personal issues. It was the second time in three years Rypien left the team to deal with undisclosed personal matters. Although the Canucks did everything they could to protect Rypien’s privacy, it was widely believed he suffered from severe mental illness and was seeking treatment."Rick has been a beloved member of the Canucks family for the past six years. Rick was a great teammate and friend to our players, coaches and staff," the Canucks said in a statement. "We send our deepest condolences to the Rypien family at this most difficult time."

"It's a personal matter, a rare issue," Rypien told reporters in Winnipeg in March. "Even though it has taken me away from hockey and the game I love, doing the work I've done the last couple of months I've made a lot of gains as a person. I really believe that's only going to benefit my on-ice performance now and make me whole."

Rypien is the second NHL fighter to die this offseason. New York Rangers heavyweight Derek Boogaard passed away in May because of an accidental mix of alcohol and the painkiller oxycodone.

Rypien signed a one-year deal with the Jets in July worth US$700,000 after posting nine goals, seven assists and 226 penalty minutes over 119 career games with the Canucks.

Who would have thought that it would be Daniel Sedin VS Steven Stamkos? Not Crosby VS Ovechkin. Beginning of the season it was all about Taylor or Tyler not Couture or Skinner. Who would have thought that after giving up a 3-0 lead in the playoffs a year before could Land you the Stanley cup the year after? That is the beauty of the National hockey league, where predicating is nothing but fun, to me these were the most surprising players of the year.

5. Corey Perry

Corey Perry grabbed our Heart, and by that I mean he really did grab our Hart. Perry's start of the season didn't go as well as he hoped, but he made up for it by coming out big in the second half of the season, finishing with 50 goals and 48 assists. Anaheim Ducks moved from 11th to 4th spot in a span of 16 games where Perry scored 19 goals. Ducks went from not making playoffs to gaining home Ice advantage. 1.Dustin Byfuglien

Not only can this guy play defense, but he can also be a forward, as seen with the Chicago Blackhawks, which resulted in a huge impacted in the 2010 playoffs leading to the Stanley Cup Championship. He’s now playing for the Atlanta Thrashers (Winnipeg Jets) who we all know isn’t the best team out there but finishing with 20 goals and 33 assists was something no one expected and is quite impressive. He had a great year and is helping a team who hasn’t achieved much since entering the league.

We all knows guys like Skinner, Couture, Eberle, Hall etc will be the future of NHL, but we don't expect them to get as many points as they have. Lets all be realistic hear, who thought Selanne would get 80 points? or Corey would win Hart? These guys surprised me the most this year. Honorable mentions go out to; Logan Couture, Patrick Sharp, Louie Eriksson, and Lubomir Visnovsky. A great season was followed by some great players. Who says it always has to be between Crosby and Ovechkin, this league is full of all-stars and it’s been proven.
